Bamberg

Aubrey Lomax Palmer, Jr. passed away at his home on September 2, 2025. Al was born on November 16, 1938, in Morganton, North Carolina, the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Aubrey Lomax Palmer, Sr.

Al graduated from Old Central High School in Charlotte, North Carolina and attended Charlotte College while working at First Union National Bank. His first banking career was interrupted by his attendance at the University of South Carolina where he received a BS in Banking and Finance in January of 1963. Al joined the US Army Reserves in February 1963 and honorably served his country for 7 years. Upon completion of his active military obligation in the Reserves, Al returned to First Union National Bank in Charlotte where he began his 35 year career working in High Point, NC, Burlington, NC, Ashe County, NC, and Anderson, SC. Upon his retirement in 1996, Al and his wife, Norma, moved back to her home in Bamberg, South Carolina.

Al was very active in Trinity Methodist Church where he was instrumental in forming the first Methodist Men’s Club and was a member of the Pastor-Parrish Relations Committee. He also served as a Lay Leader, and he was in charge of organizing the meals for the Salkehatchie Summer Camp workers for many years. Always anxious to help anyone in need, Al was involved in many service activities throughout the community including building wheelchair ramps and delivering Meals on Wheels. Al also served as a member of the Bamberg County Hospital Board.

Al and Norma were married on June 21, 1964. However, Al soon learned that he married into a large family where love flowed freely. Al became the rock of his acquired family of sisters, cousins, nieces, nephews, and brothers-in-law. Al was loved by all of the family as much as he loved them, especially by his late mother and father-in-law with whom he shared a special bond.

Al is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Norma Allen Palmer, a son, William Andrew Palmer and his wife, Heather. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Stokes Kirby (Emma Fogle), Tillman Kirby, Cambelle Kirby, Aubrey Palmer, and Dagnall Palmer and a sister, Peggy Palmer Shaver and her children Brad (Meredith) and Angela. He is also survived by special cousins, Yates and Bennie Giles. Al was pre-deceased by his son, Richard Aubrey Palmer, and three brothers-in-law: Billy Shaver, Rolly Fagan, and Curtis Williams.

The family will receive friends at the home of Andy and Heather Palmer, 360 Pine Street, Bamberg, SC. Services will be announced at a later date.
