Doris Lynn Carter Hoglen, 73, of Swansea, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at Lexington Medical Center, just one day shy of her 74th birthday, following a brief and sudden illness.
Doris was born November 5, 2952, at Fort Knox, Kentucky, to the late Marion and Eugenia "Essie" Carter. As the daughter of a military father, she grew up moving often, including a season living in Germany. That upbringing may explain why she never met a stranger. Doris built a career in banking, where she met the love of her life, Tim, when the two worked together. They married on October 9, 1993, and shared 33 years together. In recent years, Doris found great joy teaching the three-year-old class at Swansea First Baptist Church Preschool, where she poured loved into the youngest members of our community every day,
Doris and Tim joined Swansea First Baptist Church on October 7, 2018, and she quickly became a beloved part of the church family. She taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and was a faithful member of the women's Tuesday night Bible study. Every October, you could find her at the church pumpkin patch, where she volunteered each afternoon alongside her dear friend, Cindy Grimsley.
Doris loved Jesus with all her heart and was dedicated to deepening her relationship with Him. Her faith was the center of her life, and she knew without doubt where she would see her family and her children again.
Those who knew Doris will remember her as incredibly kind, unapologetically bold, strong willed and the life of any room. She was an avid yard-saler, a devoted Elvis fan and a loyal University of South Carolina Gamecocks football fan. She loved to bake and was well known for her beautiful gift baskets. She tended her plants and flowers daily. Her generosity was legendary; if someone was in need, Doris gave without hesitation. Above all, she treasured her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren and her church family.
Doris is survived by her husband of 33 years, Timothy "Tim" Hoglen; her daughter, Sabrina Freeman (Neil); her grandchildren, McKenzie (James), Carter (Savanna) and Mary (Patrick); her great-grandchildren, Paisley and Bentley; and her brothers, Marion Carter, Kenneth Carter and Dennis Carter. She was predeceased in death by her parents, Marion and Eugenia "Essie" Carter and her sons, twins, Frederick and Edson Pitts, and Edson Frederick "Ed" Pitts.
The family will receive friends at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 8, 2026, at Swansea Frist Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 4:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Terry Wilder, Rev. Chad Meredith, Rev. Matt Elmore and Dr. Chris Cornette. Interment will follow at Melrose Cemetery in Swansea.
The family extends special thanks to the ICU staff at Lexington Medical Center for their compassionate care. They are also deeply grateful to Mrs. Cindy Grimsley, a faithful and dear friends, for her loving support of Tim throughout this time.
In keeping with Doris's generous spirit, the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the First Baptist Church Benevolence Funds, 145 South Church Street, Swansea, S. C. 29160.
Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home, North, S. C. is in charge of the arrangements.
